After Wilde withdrew his libel suit on legal advice, in the face of incontrovertible evidence, Douglas won a counterclaim against Wilde for his legal expenses. This left Wilde bankrupt. Douglas passed his evidence to Scotland Yard, resulting in Wilde's conviction for gross indecency.
